What visitors should know
Texas salience does not equal Texas exclusivity: y’all and fixin’ to belong to wider Southern English, feeder is especially useful around Houston, and food/identity terms have Mexican-American, Tejano and Czech-Texan histories that should not be flattened into generic cowboy culture. Do not infer politics, race, class, rurality or birthplace from one Texas-associated expression.

Texaschile con queso / queso
In Texas Tex-Mex restaurant and home-food language, chile con queso—usually shortened simply to queso—is a warm melted-cheese-and-chile dip commonly served with tortilla chips; recipes range from processed-cheese and canned-tomato versions to restaurant preparations using other cheeses, chiles and additions.
TexasFarm-to-Market Road / FM road
In Texas, a Farm-to-Market Road is an official state-highway designation, commonly shortened to FM plus a route number, for a roadway generally in a rural area that has been designated by the Texas Transportation Commission.
Texasfeeder road
In Texas road language, a feeder road is a frontage or access road running alongside a controlled-access highway and providing connections to ramps, local streets, businesses, and nearby property; the term is especially familiar in Houston-area speech.
Texasfixin’ to
Fixin’ to is a Southern and Texas English construction meaning to be about to do something, preparing or intending to do it in the near future, often with a sense that the action is imminent.
Texaskolache
In traditional Czech-Texan usage, a kolache (from Czech koláč/koláče) is a sweet yeast pastry with an open fruit, poppy-seed, or cheese filling; in broader everyday Texas English, kolache is also commonly extended to savory sausage-filled pastries that Czech-Texan sources more precisely call klobasneks.
Texasstock tank
In Texas rural usage, a stock tank is a small pond or impounded water body on private or ranch land, historically associated with watering livestock but also used for fishing, wildlife, and other land-management purposes.
TexasTejano / Tejana
Tejano/Tejana is an identity term for a Texan of Mexican descent or a Texas Mexican, and by extension can describe cultural forms rooted in that community, including Tejano music and related arts; it is not synonymous with every Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish-speaking Texan.
TexasTex-Mex
Tex-Mex is a Texas Mexican-American cuisine and cultural food tradition shaped by the long interaction of Indigenous, Mexican/Spanish, Tejano, U.S. and regional Texas ingredients and cooking practices; it is related to but not synonymous with Mexican cuisine as a whole.
TexasTexas German
Texas German is the name for German varieties that developed among German-speaking communities in Texas, especially in Central Texas, from immigrant dialects that mixed with one another and changed through long-term contact with English.
TexasTexas turnaround
A Texas turnaround is a grade-separated U-turn connection, typically at or near a freeway interchange, that lets traffic move from one frontage road to the opposite-direction frontage road without passing through the signalized cross-street intersection.
Texasy’all
Y’all is a second-person pronoun used for addressing two or more people and sometimes a group understood from context; it is strongly associated with Texas and the U.S. South but is now used far beyond those regions.
